We all would like to make a difference to our environmentally challenged world, so have you considered volunteering for a green project? Here are some ideas:
Guerrilla gardening is definitely not about sitting back and waiting for someone else to do it - you just do it!
Join a Permablitz - this is a permaculture working bee initiative established by Dan Palmer in Melbourne. See www.permablitz.net.
Spray biodynamic preparations on public parks and contaminated land.
If you are a member of a gardening group, have a look around your neighbourhood and see what needs a green makeover.
Or maybe what’s needed is a community garden. For information on getting one started, go to www.communitygarden.org.au.
Volunteering opportunities abound:
The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden school program gives children hands-on gardening experience and promotes healthy eating. This program relies on gardening volunteers.
Greening Australia www.greeningaustralia.org.au.
Your local Landcare or Bushcare group.
Have a look for volunteering opportunities on www.volunteersearch.gov.au.
What about a working holiday on a biodynamic or organic farm? The Willing Workers On Organic Farms organisation lists thousands of farms across Australia and around the world. You can find out more and join at www.wwoof.org.
You don’t have to be an expert to volunteer, you can learn on the job. The skills and knowledge you gain make volunteering very rewarding.
Here are some ways you can give support to the developing world’s green projects:
